Though its ostensible purpose is to fund the U.S. military over a one year period, the National Defense Authorization Act, better known as the NDAA, has had numerous provisions tucked into it over the years that have targeted American civil liberties. The most well-known of these include allowing the government to wiretap American citizens without a warrant and, even more disturbingly, indefinitely imprison an American citizen without charge in the name of “national security.”

One of the lesser-known provisions that have snuck their way into the NDAA over the years was a small piece of legislation tacked onto the NDAA for fiscal year 2013, signed into law in that same year by then-President Barack Obama. Named “The Smith-Mundt Modernization Act of 2012,” it completely lifted the long-existing ban on the domestic dissemination of U.S. government-produced propaganda.

For decades, the U.S. government had been allowed to produce and disseminate propaganda abroad in order to drum up support for its foreign wars but had been banned from distributing it domestically after the passage of the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948. However, the Modernization Act’s co-authors, Reps. Mac Thornberry (R-TX) and Adam Smith (D-WA, no relation to the Smith of the 1948 act), asserted that removing the domestic ban was necessary in order to combat “al-Qaeda’s and other violent extremists’ influence among populations.”

At this point, most Americans are aware of the staggering dishonesty and reality twisting that the mainstream, corporate news media engages in on a daily basis.

Numbers released by Pew Research show that major news channels like CNN, Fox News and MSNBC are in a decline of prime time viewers.

Even reporters within the major networks have admitted that the media has been corrupted by political and corporate interests.

There is unprecedented, I believe, influence on the media, not just the news, but the images you see everywhere. By well-orchestrated and financed campaign of special interests, political interests and corporations. I think all of that comes into play.

But if there was any indication that the mainstream press has no credibility and is on its way to extinction, this latest poll is it.

Trust in the news media is being eroded by perceptions of inaccuracy and bias, fueled in part by Americans’ skepticism about what they read on social media.

Just 6 percent of people say they have a lot of confidence in the media, putting the news industry about equal to Congress and well below the public’s view of other institutions. In this presidential campaign year, Democrats were more likely to trust the news media than Republicans or independents.

Nearly 90 percent of Americans say it’s extremely or very important that the media get their facts correct, according to the study. About 4 in 10 say they can remember a specific incident that eroded their confidence in the media, most often one that dealt with accuracy or a perception that it was one-sided.

The news media have been hit by a series of blunders on high-profile stories ranging from the Supreme Court’s 2012 ruling on President Barack Obama’s health care law to the Boston Marathon bombing that have helped feed negative perceptions of the media.

In 2014, Rolling Stone had to retract a vivid report about an alleged gang rape at a fraternity party at the University of Virginia. The Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, asked by Rolling Stone to investigate after questions were raised about the veracity of the story, called it an avoidable journalistic failure and “another shock to journalism’s credibility amid head-swiveling change in the media industry.”

There is only one thing that can save the mainstream media, and that is the truth.

But the truth is not why networks like MSNBC exist. They exist to deceive and play lapdog for the establishment.

More than ever the American people want the truth and accuracy when it comes to their news. This is why we are seeing a huge rise in alternative media.

By just taking a look at the popular commercial web traffic data and analytics site, Alexa.com, we see that alternative news sites are ranking very high inside the United States and globally.

The very popular and accurate ActivistPost.com is ranked in the top 16,000 websites inside the United States and in the top 35,000 globally!

Just to put that in perspective, there are over 1 billion websites in all globally.

Considered to be the tip of the spear of the alternative news, Alex Jones’s Infowars.com is ranking in the top 1,200 websites in the U.S. and the top 3,200 globally!

Alexa.com gathers data on a web page’s daily unique visitors and daily pageviews.

Another great example of alternative news rising to mainstream popularity is James Corbett’s CorbettReport.com. This stunning website is ranking in the top 150,000 globally and in the top 60,000 in the U.S.

Propaganda has hidden toll from the American people

U.S. wars initiated at the behest of a global financial elite killed more than 2,000,000 people, according to a report published by Physicians for Social Responsibility.

The average American, the report notes, is a victim of a massive propaganda campaign designed to propagate lies about these undeclared an illegal wars.

“A poll carried out by the Associated Press (AP) two years ago found that, on average, US citizens believe that only 9,900 Iraqis were killed during the occupation,” the reports reads.

Physicians for Social Responsibility places the blame for this on the corporate media. The NGO, however, does not indicate why the government and the establishment media deliberately downplay the death and destruction inflicted by the Bush and Obama administrations, although they say the current “state of affairs could be very different if the public were made aware that the actual number is likely to be more than a hundred times higher” than the numbers reported by The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, Fox, et al.

“The report is sure to fuel outrage over one of the most controversial wars in US history, one in which ‘the original pretexts for going to war quickly turned out to be spurious, and from then on only the ‘liberation of the country from a violent dictatorship’ and the “democratization” and “stabilization” of Iraq remained as justification for the war and occupation,’” reports Sputnik, a news agency owned by the Russian government.

It may fuel outrage in Europe and Russia, where the media covers studies indicting the U.S. government and its foreign policy, but is unlikely to do likewise in the United States.

Growing Support in U.S. For Unlimited War

In February the Pew Research Center reported growing support for the ISIS war. “The public has grown more supportive of the U.S. fight against ISIS, as about twice as many approve (63%) as disapprove (30%) of the military campaign against the Islamic militant group in Iraq and Syria. Last October, 57% approved and 33% disapproved,” Pew reported.

Earlier this month a Quinnipiac poll showed American voters strongly in support of sending ground troops to battle ISIS by more than a 2-to-1 margin.

In February a proposed a new Authorization for the Use of Military Force was left deliberately undefined “because we believe it’s important that there aren’t overly burdensome constraints that are placed on the commander in chief,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.

Critics interpret this to mean the executive branch of the government wants to expand the reach of the imperial presidency and allow it to wage war against ill-defined enemies anywhere in the world.

Additionally, the administration believes the deliberately ambiguous AUMF will bring lawmakers together in a bipartisan coalition calling for a war against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq without restraint, including the use of ground troops.

Alex Jones: CNN Caught Airing Fake Broadcast During Gulf War 8-24-09 Part 1

Alex Jones recalls a main stream media fake broadcast from 18 years ago during the Gulf War.

MSNBC has been caught airing a deceptively edited video of a rally that took place in Washington D.C. over the weekend, in addition to flagrantly lying to its viewers.

Raw footage of the protests outside the gates of the White House showed hyped-up riot police striking and shoving elderly war vets.

However, in a segment produced by MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, only two-thirds of the footage was shown, making it appear as though veterans initiated the confrontations.

Just as we witnessed during the Trayvon Martin affair, NBC has once again utilized selective editing techniques in attempts to manipulate its target audience, omitting violence on the part of police in order to demonize protesters who dared to defend themselves against the barrage of assaults – both to their bodies and their liberties.

Maddow also played the rally off as a small gathering of fringe Tea Party supporters, in efforts to dismiss legitimate protests through divide and conquer.

In reality, the demonstration, for the most part, was a non-partisan assembly of vets and concerned citizens infuriated with the Obama administration’s spiteful decision to barricade national war memorials.

Maddow followed through with a patently dishonest statement that the police featured weren’t being paid.

Later in the segment, Maddow also pulled the typical stunt of equating opposition to Obama with racism, pointing out a lone man waving the Confederate flag.

In airing the clearly dishonest report, Maddow has once again demonstrated she is a useful minion of the Obama administration, working hard to manipulate her audience and in turn stifle opposition so that more people don’t go out and defend liberty.

It’s interesting to note that, in the video, Metropolitan police are dressed in jackets festooned with a patch that reads “Washington D.C. The American Experience,” as they forcefully fend off the very veterans who at one time fought to defend America.

This is part of our series on the unaccounted for $21 Trillion in taxpayer money. As unbelievable and absurd as that sounds, the actual total of unaccounted for money at the Pentagon is most likely significantly more than $21 trillion. The First ever “full-scope audit” of the Pentagon is presently underway. Read the first report from this series here.

According to the Department of Defense Inspector General and the Defense Finance and Accounting Service, $21 Trillion in Taxpayer Funding Is Unaccounted For.

To help people comprehend the scale of this, $1 Trillion is $1000 Billion. This means that $21,000 Billion in taxpayer money has gone missing.

How can this be possible?

For further understanding, we are featuring another mind-blowing Department of Defense Inspector General (DOD IG) report.

The following are highlights from the DOD IG “Summary of DOD Office of the Inspector General Audits of Financial Management”:

The financial management systems DOD has put in place to control and monitor the money flow don’t facilitate but actually “prevent DOD from collecting and reporting financial information… that is accurate, reliable, and timely.” (p. 4)

DOD frequently enters “unsupported” (i.e. imaginary) amounts in its books (p. 13) and uses those figures to make the books balance. (p. 14)

Inventory records are not reviewed and adjusted; unreliable and inaccurate data are used to report inventories, and purchases are made based on those distorted inventory reports. (p. 7)

DOD managers do not know how much money is in their accounts at the Treasury, or when they spend more than Congress appropriates to them. (p. 5)18

Nor does DOD “record, report, collect, and reconcile” funds received from other agencies or the public (p. 6),

DOD tracks neither buyer nor seller amounts when conducting transactions with other agencies. (p. 12)

“The cost and depreciation of the DOD general property, plant, and equipment are not reliably reported….” (p. 8);

“… the value of DOD property and material in the possession of contractors is not reliably reported.” (p. 9)

DOD does not know who owes it money, nor how much. (p. 10.)

Pentagon Cannot Account For $6.5 Trillion Dollars

It gets worse; overall:

“audit trails” are not kept “in sufficient detail,” which means no one can track the money;
DOD’s “Internal Controls,” intended to track the money, are inoperative. Thus, DOD cost reports and financial statements are inaccurate, and the size, even the direction (in plus or minus values), of the errors cannot be identified, and
DOD does not observe many of the laws that govern all this.

It is as if the accountability and appropriations clauses of the U.S. Constitution were just window dressing, behind which this mind-numbing malfeasance thrives.

Technically, this is a violation of the Anti-Deficiency Act, a statute carrying felony sanctions of fines and imprisonment.

Congress and the Pentagon annually report and hold hearings on DOD’s lack of financial accountability and sometimes enact new laws, but many of the new laws simply permit the Pentagon to ignore the previous ones; others are eyewash.

If you have a system that does not accurately know what its spending history is, and does not know what it is now (and does not care to redress the matter), how can you expect it to make a competent, honest estimate of future costs?

It is self-evident that an operation that tolerates inaccurate, unverifiable data cannot be soundly managed; it exempts itself from any reasonable standard of efficiency.

Recall, also that the errors in cost, schedule and performance that result are not random: actual costs always turn out to be much higher than, sometimes even multiples of, early estimates; the schedule is always optimistic, and the performance is always inflated.

The Pentagon, defense industry and their congressional operatives want – need – to increase the money flow into the system to pretend to improve it.

Supported by a psychology of excessive secrecy, generated fear and the ideological belief that there is no alternative to high cost, high complexity weapons, higher budgets are easier to justify, especially if no one can sort out how the Pentagon actually spends its money.

The key to the DOD spending problem is to initiate financial accountability. No failed system can be understood or fixed if it cannot be accurately measured.

And yet, there is no sense of urgency in the Pentagon to do anything about it.

The question must be asked: if nothing has been done by the Pentagon to end the accountability problem after more than 20 years of promises, is top management simply incompetent, or is this the intended result of obfuscation to avert accountability?

A spending system that effectively audits its weapon programs and offices would also be one that systemically uncovers incompetent and crooked managers, false promises and those who made them.

It would also necessarily reveal reasons to dramatically alter, if not cease, funding for some programs, which of course would make lots of people in industry, Congress, and the executive branch unhappy.

The current system and its out of control finances mortally harm our defenses, defraud taxpayers, and bloat the Pentagon and federal budgets.

Any reform that fails to address this most fundamental problem is merely another doomed attempt that will only serve to perpetuate a system that thrives on falsehoods and deception.

William Hartung, Director of the Arms and Security Project at the Center for International Policy, summed up the accountability crisis at the Pentagon by saying:

“Call it irony or call it symptomatic of the department’s way of life, but an analysis by the Project on Government Oversight notes the Pentagon has so far spent roughly $6 billion on ‘fixing’ the audit problem — with no solution in sight.

This may seem like it's just a small local story. But it's a story that shows that police themselves will suffer at the hands of the government when it is allowed to ignore the constitution. After a Police Chief, on his way to a Constitutional Sheriff's & Peace Officers meeting was hassled by TSA he eventually had enough and had words with a plainsclothes man who identified himself only as a "federal agent".

This is a story that raises very serious concerns for us all:
- was he targeted by the surveillance state because he going to a Constitutional Sheriff's meeting?
- was the department targeted for vindictive retaliation from the TSA because the Police Chief stood up to them violating his 4th Amendment rights

Forgive me for being cynical, but Fox News’ claim that airing the wrong CPAC footage and then introducing an interview with Ron Paul on the false premise that he had been booed was merely a “mistake” rings somewhat hollow, especially given the fact that Fox, along with the rest of the establishment media networks, have for years consistently denigrated the Congressman’s presidential aspirations with a myriad of dirty tricks, lies and smear campaigns. As we highlighted yesterday, in a shocking act of mass public deception, Fox News attempted to skew Ron Paul’s 2011 CPAC straw poll win by representing it with footage from the previous year’s CPAC event, at which Mitt Romney supporters had loudly booed the result and Paul supporters had been absent due to a Campaign for Liberty meeting running late

Fox News host Bill Hemmer framed his interview with Paul by immediately bringing up the boos, despite the fact that the real footage of this year’s CPAC poll result showed Paul’s victory being met with a loud chorus of cheers and applause.

In a statement provided to Mediaite, Fox’s Senior Vice President of News Michael Clemente attempted to defuse the growing controversy over the incident by claiming it was all a harmless broadcasting error.

“We made a mistake with some of the video we aired, and plan on issuing a correction on America’s Newsroom tomorrow morning explaining exactly what happened,” said Clemente.

Really? It is plausible that this was just another “mistake”? How about the myriad of other “mistakes” Fox News makes a habit of committing, mistakes that coincidentally all serve to disparage Congressman Paul’s message of liberty and freedom, along with his chances of becoming president?

“It’s certainly plausible that Fox News merely made a mistake in pulling up the wrong video,” adds Mediaite, noting that the explanation is unlikely to “Satisfy Paul supporters who seem to believe the network tried to disguise how much support the congressman has amongst the GOP base.”

Was it another “mistake” to omit Paul’s name entirely from aFox News survey last week that asked who would make the best president? Was it a “mistake” that relative nobodies like John Thune and Jon Huntsman were included in the Fox poll and yet Paul was blacklisted entirely despite his CPAC success two years running?

Was it another “mistake” on behalf of Fox News toexclude Paul from a January 6 2008 presidential forum eventbecause they saw the prospect of anti-war opinions being voiced by the most conservative member of the House as a “threat”?

Was it amere “mistake” for Fox News host Sean Hannityto deride the Texas Congressman’s runaway success in the text messaging poll as nothing more than “Paulites” flood voting, when in reality only one vote per cell phone number was allowed? Hannity’s contention that Ron Paul supporters were “were simply dialing in over and over again” was nothing more than a brazen lie intended to dismiss the Congressman’s widespread popularity. No one at Fox News bothered to correct Hannity and no retraction was issued.

Was it a mistake whenFox News directors conspired to censor Ron Paul supporters from appearing in camera shots during the Mackinac Republican Conference on September 22, 2007, when they were caught on film stating, “I don’t want these Ron Paul people, but I need shots of audience”?

Was it a“mistake” for Fox News to ignore a storyevery other news outlet was obliged to report, the record-breaking $4.2 million in campaign donations that Ron Paul achieved in a single day, while instead choosing to obsess about a man in Texas who sat in a bath tub full of snakes?

Were all of the examples contained in the video below showing rampant Fox News and other networks’ bias against Ron Paul simply “mistakes” or something more?

Are all these examples merely “mistakes” or are they hard evidence of the fact that Fox News, in alliance with every other establishment media news network, has a deeply ingrained bias against Ron Paul’s message and is scared stiff of him ever building enough momentum to have a chance of becoming president?

While at this rally you spot an individual seated in a wheelchair in the middle of a street. As he is sitting there in the peaceful act of defiance, he is approached by Armed Riot Police. So back to Amber. Back in March 2011, CNN sent a four person team to Bahrain to cover the Arab Spring. Once there, the crew was the subject of extreme intimidation amongst other things, but they were able to record some fantastic footage. As Glenn Greenwald of the UK's Guardian writes in his blockbuster article from today:

"In the segment, Lyon interviewed activists as they explicitly described their torture at the hands of government forces, while family members recounted their relatives' abrupt disappearances. She spoke with government officials justifying the imprisonment of activists. And the segment featured harrowing video footage of regime forces shooting unarmed demonstrators, along with the mass arrests of peaceful protesters. In sum, the early 2011 CNN segment on Bahrain presented one of the starkest reports to date of the brutal repression embraced by the US-backed regime.

Despite these accolades, and despite the dangers their own journalists and their sources endured to produce it, CNN International (CNNi) never broadcast the documentary. Even in the face of numerous inquiries and complaints from their own employees inside CNN, it continued to refuse to broadcast the program or even provide any explanation for the decision. To date, this documentary has never aired on CNNi.

Having just returned from Bahrain, Lyon says she "saw first-hand that these regime claims were lies, and I couldn't believe CNN was making me put what I knew to be government lies into my reporting."

CNN denied reports that tear gas was used in Ferguson, Mo. Sunday morning after protesters defied the state-imposed curfew.

Despite initially reporting on the use of tear gas, CNN quickly retracted their statements to instead give a police-friendly version of events, telling viewers that only smoke was used.

Those on scene took to social media to refute CNN’s claims with evidence of tear gas canisters. Even as other news outlets began to confirm the use of tear gas, CNN continued to blindly rely only on reports from police.

Infowars reporters were hit with tear gas shortly after leaving the designated press area to document the remaining protesters.

Demonstrators defied the martial law crackdown by continuing to protest well past the midnight curfew.

Anchor interrupts Congresswoman during NSA spying segment to talk Justin Bieber

A viral video clip which shows an MSNBC host interrupting a Congressman talking about shutting down NSA spying to switch to “breaking news” of Justin Bieber’s court appearance is a perfect illustration of why the mainstream media is dying.

The clip shows Congresswoman Jane Harman talking to MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, who was recently slammed for conducting a softball interview with a CIA torture-endorsing lawyer.

The pair were discussing the news that the government-appointed Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board had found that the NSA’s phone spying program was illegal, should be terminated, and had not led to the apprehension of a single terrorist.

“Congresswoman Harman, let me interrupt you just for a moment we’ve got some breaking news out of Miami, stand by if you will,” host Andrea Mitchell states as she cuts off the Congresswoman mid-sentence. “Right now in Miami Justin Bieber has been arrested on a number of charges.”

The video feed then switches to cover the earth-shattering importance of the 19-year-old pop star’s appearance in court.

The corporate media’s power over the last few decades has rested on its ability to dictate reality by affording blanket coverage to complete non-issues while ignoring or downplaying actual stories that impact millions of people.

That power is now rapidly diminishing precisely because of stunts like this. From November 2012 to November 2013, MSNBC lost almost half its viewers over the course of just 12 months, shedding 45 per cent of its audience. CNN, which also afforded Bieber saturation coverage yesterday, lost 48 per cent of its viewers over the same time period.

The corporate media’s refusal to cover real issues has also led to record high levels of distrust in media. Last year, a Gallup poll found that just 23 per cent of Americans trust the institution of television news.

This is why mainstream media is collapsing and alternative media in all its different guises is filling the vacuum.

Just who does MSNBC think its audience is? 14-year-old schoolgirls? The fact that mainstream networks across the board had Bieber as their top story proves that such organizations are no longer in the business of covering real news and are quickly beginning to resemble irrelevant imitations of vapid entertainment cable channels.

Glenn Beck likes to pretend he is a Libertarian. But he’s not, in fact he is not even close.

A revolution has been launched against rationality and truth. The term “conspiracy theory” has been harnessed into a pejorative weapon with which to bludgeon free speech, healthy skepticism and independent thinking.

In reality, today’s “conspiracy theorist” is someone who has managed to retain some remnant of control over their own thought process and one who has successfully resisted becoming another victim of ‘gaslighting’ – an individual who knows when they are being lied to.

We live in an era where the ‘big lie’ has come to dominate virtually every sector of modern society – from news to entertainment, to foreign policy and politics, to the economy and healthcare. Only by refusing to accept that logic is an enemy and truth a menace, only by refusing to become victims of ‘gaslighting’ can we truly remain sane, rational, and not allow our understanding of the world to be shaped by those who see us as obsolete.

Here are the top ten media and government hoaxes in recent history – lies and distortions that underscore how we truly are living in an age of universal deceit.

The lie that launched a war, following in the footsteps of numerous others throughout history including the Gulf of Tonkin hoax and the USS Maine. Not long after September 11 and for over a year until the invasion, the mainstream media dutifully repeated the hoax that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. One of the main sources used by the British and US governments to make the claim, Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi, codenamed Curveball, later admitted that he lied about the existence of a WMD program in Iraq and then “watched in shock as it was used to justify the war”.

With most top analysts firmly of the opinion that Bin Laden died many years ago, a deluge of evidence suggests the May 2011 raid was a manufactured hoax. From the phony situation room photos, to the ludicrous “burial at sea” narrative, to the eyewitness testimony of those who lived in the same village where the raid supposedly took place, the assassination of Osama had all the hallmarks of a Jessica Lynch-style Hollywood hoax.

Even after drone strikes were already being conducted and reported on around the world, former White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was told by the Obama administration to act as if there was no such thing as an active US drone program – regurgitating the hoax that the entire project was completely non-existent. “When I went through the process of becoming press secretary, one of the first things they told me was, you’re not even to acknowledge the drone program,” Gibbs said on MSNBC’s “Up With Chris Hayes” last month.

The Federal Reserve is no more federal than Federal Express. It is a private bank that poses as a government entity. In 2011, when the New York Times attempted to obtain documents about the Fed’s loans to foreign banks under the Freedom of Information Act, the Fed responded by admitting that it was in fact a privately owned bank and not federal at all, therefore not subject to FOIA requests. As the long-time Chairman of the House Banking and Currency Committee Charles McFadden said on June 10, 1932: “Some people think that the Federal Reserve Banks are United States Government institutions. They are private monopolies.” In 1982, the Ninth Circuit Court ruled that, “Examining the organization and function of the Federal Reserve Banks, and applying the relevant factors, we conclude that the Reserve Banks are not federal instrumentalities for purposes of the FTCA, but are independent, privately-owned and locally controlled corporations.”

The unemployment rate reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and regurgitated by the media is a hoax. As economist John Williams of the Shadow Government Statistics website exhaustively documents, the real unemployment figure is closer to 23 per cent because the government figure does not include citizens who have stopped looking for work over the course of the previous month. “Since 1994, the long-term discouraged workers, those who have been discouraged for more than one year, have been excluded from all government data,” writes Jerome Corsi.

Despite all its associated health risks, the flu vaccines does not protect you against the flu. The shots have to be renewed every year and even then recent statistics show that the flu vaccine is, “effective in only 56 percent of people who got the shot, and it largely failed to protect the elderly against an especially deadly strain circulating during flu season.”

The establishment media, aided by a raft of leftist websites, is portraying concern over the Department of Homeland Security’s purchase of some 2 billion rounds of ammunition as a conspiracy theory by regurgitating the glib statement of a single DHS official. Erroneously claiming that the mass bullet buys are merely for training purposes or the government saving money by buying in bulk, the hoax conveniently ignores the fact that most of the bullets purchased are hollow point rounds which are both more and expensive and unsuitable for training purposes. The DHS admits that it is preparing for civil unrest by purchasing riot gear and yet the media still portrays the notion that the DHS is preparing for civil unrest as a “conspiracy theory”.

The biggest political hoax ever invented – that the Republicans and the Democrats represent opposing forces – still continues to dominate despite the two parties habitually agreeing on every major issue. As Georgetown University Professor Carroll Quigley (Bill Clinton’s mentor), wrote in his book Tragedy and Hope, “The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies, one, perhaps, of the Right and the other of the Left, is a foolish idea acceptable only to the doctrinaire and academic thinkers. Instead, the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can “throw the rascals out” at any election without leading to any profound or extreme shifts in policy. … Either party in office becomes in time corrupt, tired, unenterprising, and vigorless. Then it should be possible to replace it, every four years if necessary, by the other party, which will be none of these things but will still pursue, with new vigor, approximately the same basic policies.”

The notion of a war on drugs, one that continues to ensnare thousands of Americans in the prison-industrial system, is a complete hoax. As Pulitzer Prize winning author Gary Webb exposed before his “suicide,” the Central Intelligence Agency and the Drug Enforcement Agency control and operate the global drugs trade. US soldiers are now guarding the opium fields in Afghanistan as record amounts of heroin leave the country destined for US and European markets. Smith-Mundt Act “reformed” this month allowing CIA to disseminate propaganda

Operation Mockingbird, the CIA’s long term effort to control the news, has shifted into overdrive.

On July 2, a little noticed “reform” passed in January went into effect. The Smith-Mundt Modernization Act of 2012, passed as part of the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act, will allow the CIA to flood America with more government propaganda.

The Smith-Mundt Act, passed as the national security state was taking shape in 1948, authorized the State Department to unleash a tidal wave of propaganda outside the United States while supposedly forbidding its dissemination inside the country. The law set the stage for Frank Wisner, who headed up the CIA’s covert action division in the early 1950s, to build his “mighty Wurlitzer,” described by none other than the New York Times as “the means for orchestrating, in almost any language anywhere in the world, whatever tune the CIA was in the mood to hear.”

In the years since, the establishment media has worked hand in glove with the CIA. This cozy relationship was revealed by Frank Church and the Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities in 1975 and, a few years later, by reporter Carl Bernstein.

“Among the chief executives who helped the CIA were William Paley of CBS, Henry Luce of Time, Arthur Sulzberger of the New York Times, Barry Bingham Sr. of the Louisville Courier-Journal, and James Copley of the Copley News Service,” write Amy Goodman and David Goodman in Unreality TV, The Mighty Wurlitzer, Hijacking Public Media, a chapter from the book Static: Government Liars, Media Cheerleaders, and the People Who Fight Back. “The leading TV networks, including ABC and NBC, and the wire services-AP, UPI, Reuters, along with Hearst Newspapers, Scripps Howard, Newsweek, the Miami Herald, and the Saturday Evening Post all had dealings with the spy agency. The CIA’s most valuable associations were with the New York Times, CBS, and Time Inc.”

This media penetration by the CIA is not merely a baseless conspiracy theory as some might argue, but is backed up by CIA office memos released under FOIA revealing the placement of “important assets” inside every major news organization in the country. “It was not until 1982 that the Agency openly admitted that reporters on the CIA payroll have acted as case officers to agents in the field,” writes Alex Constantine.

“Most consumers of the corporate media were – and are – unaware of the effect that the salting of public opinion has on their own beliefs,” Constantine continues. “A network anchorman in time of national crisis is an instrument of psychological warfare in the MOCKINGBIRD media. He is a creature from the national security sector’s chamber of horrors. For this reason consumers of the corporate press have reason to examine their basic beliefs about government and life in the parallel universe of these United States.”

Despite the promise of the Smith-Mundt Act – that a firewall stands between foreign and domestic propaganda – the CIA, the bastard child of Wall Street lawyers, has never honored its charter (prohibiting domestic operation) and has consistently utilized the corporate media as a propaganda machine.

Enactment of the Smith-Mundt Modernization Act underscores the fact the CIA no longer pretends to honor its charter and refrains from flooding the media with government propaganda. “The evaporation of Smith-Mundt and other provisions to safeguard U.S. citizens against government propaganda campaigns is part of a larger trend within the diplomatic and military establishment,” ace reporter Michael Hastings wrote in May, 2012, more than a year before his assassination.

In fact, this “larger trend” has been in effect since the imposition of the National Security Act in 1947 and the establishment of the National Security Council, the principal forum used by the financial elite and their intelligence apparatus to dictate policy to the president of the United States and the State Department.

“Conspiracy Theory”: Foundations of a
Weaponized Term
Subtle and Deceptive Tactics to Discredit Truth in Media and Research

“Conspiracy theory” is a term that at once strikes fear and anxiety in the hearts of most every public figure, particularly journalists and academics. Since the 1960s the label has become a disciplinary device that has been overwhelmingly effective in defining certain events off limits to inquiry or debate. Especially in the United States raising legitimate questions about dubious official narratives destined to inform public opinion (and thereby public policy) is a major thought crime that must be cauterized from the public psyche at all costs.

Conspiracy theory’s acutely negative connotations may be traced to liberal historian Richard Hofstadter’s well-known fusillades against the “New Right.” Yet it was the Central Intelligence Agency that likely played the greatest role in effectively “weaponizing” the term. In the groundswell of public skepticism toward the Warren Commission’s findings on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the CIA sent a detailed directive to all of its bureaus. Titled “Countering Criticism of the Warren Commission Report,” the dispatch played a definitive role in making the “conspiracy theory” term a weapon to be wielded against almost any individual or group calling the government’s increasingly clandestine programs and activities into question.

This important memorandum and its broad implications for American politics and public discourse are detailed in a forthcoming book by Florida State University political scientist Lance de-Haven-Smith, Conspiracy Theory in America. Dr. de-Haven-Smith devised the state crimes against democracy concept to interpret and explain potential government complicity in events such as the Gulf of Tonkin incident, the major political assassinations of the 1960s, and 9/11.

“CIA Document 1035-960” was released in response to a 1976 FOIA request by the New York Times. The directive is especially significant because it outlines the CIA’s concern regarding “the whole reputation of the American government” vis-à-vis the Warren Commission Report. The agency was especially interested in maintaining its own image and role as it “contributed information to the [Warren] investigation.”

The memorandum lays out a detailed series of actions and techniques for “countering and discrediting the claims of the conspiracy theorists, so as to inhibit the circulation of such claims in other countries.” For example, approaching “friendly elite contacts (especially politicians and editors)” to remind them of the Warren Commission’s integrity and soundness should be prioritized. “[T]he charges of the critics are without serious foundation,” the document reads, and “further speculative discussion only plays in to the hands of the [Communist] opposition.”

The agency also directed its members “[t]o employ propaganda assets to [negate] and refute the attacks of the critics. Book reviews and feature articles are particularly appropriate for this purpose.”

1035-960 further delineates specific techniques for countering “conspiratorial” arguments centering on the Warren Commission’s findings. Such responses and their coupling with the pejorative label have been routinely wheeled out in various guises by corporate media outlets, commentators and political leaders to this day against those demanding truth and accountability about momentous public events.

Today more so than ever news media personalities and commentators occupy powerful positions for initiating propaganda activities closely resembling those set out in 1035-960 against anyone who might question state-sanctioned narratives of controversial and poorly understood occurrences. Indeed, as the motives and methods encompassed in the document have become fully internalized by intellectual workers and operationalized through such media, the almost uniform public acceptance of official accounts concerning unresolved events such as the Oklahoma City Murrah Federal Building bombing, 9/11, and most recently the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, is largely guaranteed.

The effect on academic and journalistic inquiry into ambiguous and unexplained events that may in turn mobilize public inquiry, debate and action has been dramatic and far-reaching. One need only look to the rising police state and evisceration of civil liberties and constitutional protections as evidence of how this set of subtle and deceptive intimidation tactics has profoundly encumbered the potential for future independent self-determination and civic empowerment.

Corporate Media Ignores Evidence CIA’s al-Nusra Responsible for Syrian Sarin Attack

The establishment media ignored Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh’s latest article indicating al-Nusra was behind sarin attacks in Syria.

Although Hersh is a freelance journalist, his articles have consistently appeared in The New Yorker. He told The Huffington Post “there was little interest” for the story at The New Yorker. Hersh then took the story to the Washington Post, but the newspaper decided not to publish it. The New Yorker and the Washington Post did not respond to media inquiries asking for an explanation, BuzzFeed reported on Sunday. Hersh’s story, Whose Sarin?, eventually found its way to the London Review of Books.

Hersh’s inability to get the story published provides further evidence revealing establishment control of the corporate media and its dictation of information to be made public.

The Obama administration seized upon a poison gas attack in the suburbs of Damascus as evidence the al-Bashar regime had used chemical weapons on Syrian civilians. In September, Obama delivered an address stating “we know the Assad regime was responsible” for the attack. The president said if the United States failed to act, “these weapons could threaten allies like Turkey, Jordan and Israel.”

Two days later, on September 10, Obama postponed a strike on Syria in response to its alleged but unsubstantiated use of chemicals weapons. According to the New York Times, Obama faced “implacable opposition to a strike against Syria in Congress and throughout the country.”

The hype surrounding Syria’s chemical weapons ignored an earlier report stating that Turkish officials had discovered caches of dealy sarin gas in the homes of al-Nusra mercenaries. According to reports, the group planned to use the gas in an attack in the southern Turkish city of Adana.

On September 14, WorldNetDaily reported that Turkish anti-terror police seized a two-kilogram cylinder of sarin gas from members of al-Nusra on the Syrian border. The National Ground Intelligence Center report leaked to media states that al-Qaeda in Iraq produced a “kitchen variety” sarin gas and shipped it to the al-Nusra Front in Syria.

The Pentagon has admitted al-Qaeda in Iraq was part of a military psychological operation. “An internal document produced by U.S. military headquarters in Iraq, states that ‘the Zarqawi PSYOP program is the most successful information campaign to date,’” the Washington Post reported on April 10, 2006. The mysterious and elusive Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was billed as a terrorist mastermind. He was allegedly killed in the Sulaimaniyah mountains of northern Iraq by the U.S. military.

Senior U.S. military officials agreed with the conclusions of Dr. Yossef Bodansky, a top terrorism expert, who said the sarin taken from al-Nusra by the Turks was the same variety used in the chemical attacks outside of Damascus.

“We regret to inform you that some of our former co-workers are telling us, categorically, that contrary to the claims of your administration, the most reliable intelligence shows that Bashar al-Assad was NOT responsible for the chemical incident that killed and injured Syrian civilians on August 21,” a dozen former U.S. military officials said in a letter sent to Obama.

Who Owns The Media? The 6 Monolithic Corporations That Control Almost Everything We Watch, Hear And Read

Back in 1983, approximately 50 corporations controlled the vast majority of all news media in the United States. Today, ownership of the news media has been concentrated in the hands of just six incredibly powerful media corporations. These corporate behemoths control most of what we watch, hear and read every single day. They own television networks, cable channels, movie studios, newspapers, magazines, publishing houses, music labels and even many of our favorite websites. Sadly, most Americans don't even stop to think about who is feeding them the endless hours of news and entertainment that they constantly ingest. Most Americans don't really seem to care about who owns the media. But they should. The truth is that each of us is deeply influenced by the messages that are constantly being pounded into our heads by the mainstream media. The average American watches 153 hours of television a month. In fact, most Americans begin to feel physically uncomfortable if they go too long without watching or listening to something. Sadly, most Americans have become absolutely addicted to news and entertainment and the ownership of all that news and entertainment that we crave is being concentrated in fewer and fewer hands each year.

The six corporations that collectively control U.S. media today are Time Warner, Walt Disney, Viacom, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., CBS Corporation and NBC Universal. Together, the "big six" absolutely dominate news and entertainment in the United States. But even those areas of the media that the "big six" do not completely control are becoming increasingly concentrated. For example, Clear Channel now owns over 1000 radio stations across the United States. Companies like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft are increasingly dominating the Internet.

But it is the "big six" that are the biggest concerns. When you control what Americans watch, hear and read you gain a great deal of control over what they think. They don't call it "programming" for nothing.

Back in 1983 it was bad enough that about 50 corporations dominated U.S. media. But since that time, power over the media has rapidly become concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer people....

In 1983, fifty corporations dominated most of every mass medium and the biggest media merger in history was a $340 million deal. … [I]n 1987, the fifty companies had shrunk to twenty-nine. … [I]n 1990, the twenty-nine had shrunk to twenty three. … [I]n 1997, the biggest firms numbered ten and involved the $19 billion Disney-ABC deal, at the time the biggest media merger ever. … [In 2000] AOL Time Warner’s $350 billion merged corporation [was] more than 1,000 times larger [than the biggest deal of 1983].

These gigantic media corporations do not exist to objectively tell the truth to the American people. Rather, the primary purpose of their existence is to make money.

These gigantic media corporations are not going to do anything to threaten their relationships with their biggest advertisers (such as the largest pharmaceutical companies that literally spend billions on advertising), and one way or another these gigantic media corporations are always going to express the ideological viewpoints of their owners.

Fortunately, an increasing number of Americans are starting to wake up and are realizing that the mainstream media should not be trusted. According to a new poll just released by Gallup, the number of Americans that have little to no trust in the mainstream media (57%) is at an all-time high.

That is one reason why we have seen the alternative media experience such rapid growth over the past few years. The mainstream media has been losing credibility at a staggering rate, and Americans are starting to look elsewhere for the truth about what is really going on.

Sure there are a few courageous reporters in the mainstream media that manage to slip a few stories past their corporate bosses from time to time, but in general there is a very clear understanding that there are simply certain things that you just do not say in the mainstream news.

But Americans are becoming increasingly hungry for the truth, and they are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the dumbed down pablum that is passing as "hard hitting news" these days.

The dinosaur media is in terminal decline but it will not go down without a fight, which is why the establishment is relying on a number of different techniques to remain relevant while strangling its competition.

Recent polls show that trust in mainstream media is hovering at record lows. Print journalism is fast becoming a distant memory as the establishment press rapidly loses its audience to independent media outlets on the Internet.

Far from accepting its fate meekly, the system has rolled out the big guns in a desperate bid to either eliminate or assimilate the burgeoning alternative press.

The latest example is buried within the secretive Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement (TPP) and concerns “intellectual property enforcement.” Put simply, the agreement will mandate ISPs to remove online content without the need for a burden of proof or any kind of legal process, greasing the skids for aggressive and disproportionate censorship-driven takedowns.

“If instituted, the TPP’s IP regime would trample over individual rights and free expression, as well as ride roughshod over the intellectual and creative commons,” reads a Wikileaks statement. “If you read, write, publish, think, listen, dance, sing or invent; if you farm or consume food; if you’re ill now or might one day be ill, the TPP has you in its crosshairs.”

Another way the mainstream media is trying to strangle alternative voices that might challenge its narrative is by phasing out or banning article comments altogether.

Studies confirm that article comment sections – for better or worse – are heavily swaying public opinion.

Popular Science and BoingBoing.net recently announced their decision to kill comment sections on their website. The New York Times alsorecently indicated that it is scaling back comments and removing them from some articles altogether.

As an excellent Daily Tech piece highlights, Popular Science admitted that its decision to pull the comment section was in order to preach a “scientific doctrine” on global warming without being challenged.

The move to kill off comments altogether comes after a largely failed attempt on behalf of major companies and governments around the world to hire armies of paid employees to troll comments by disseminating pro-establishment positions in a bid to shift popular perceptions.

In 2010, the Canadian government announced it would, “monitor online chatter about political issues and correct what it perceives as misinformation.”

Turkey, Israel, China, are just some of the governments openly hiring paid trolls to steer public opinion, while the Pentagon announced earlier this year that it is stepping up its public relations efforts in order to counter scandals about the U.S. government emerging on huge but non-establishment news outlets like the Drudge Report.

In 2011 it was also revealed that the U.S. government, “contracted HBGary Federal for the development of software which could create multiple fake social media profiles to manipulate and sway public opinion on controversial issues by promoting propaganda.”

Another way the establishment media will look to re-assert itself is by posing as alternative media – funding news outlets that purport to be independent yet are backed by government or corporate cash.

Large mainstream news organizations like ITN are busy creating offshoot platforms that present themselves as “citizen journalism” yet are ultimately bankrolled and controlled by the establishment media itself.

Meanwhile, large news organizations that initially operated somewhat outside of the influence of the establishment media, like the Huffington Post, are being quickly swallowed up by giant corporations like AOL.

The mainstream media will attempt to use all of these methods and more to either supplant or destroy independent voices that are not controlled by the establishment, which is why independent media needs to be more watchful than ever if the Internet is to remain a bastion of free speech and continue to provide a genuine alternative to the corporate press.
